Within the Faculty of PE, Sport and Health, BTEC Health and Social Care is a popular vocational qualification at both Key Stage 4 and 5. The BTEC Tech Award suite at level 2 is an introduction to vocational learning. The qualifications give learners the opportunity to build skills that show an aptitude for further learning, both in the sector and more widely. The approach to the suite is based on well-established BTEC assessment approaches that are proven to be successful in building skills and motivating learners to engage fully with challenging study. Study of this sector at Key Stage 4 complements GCSE study through providing an opportunity for practical application alongside conceptual study. There are also strong opportunities for post-16 progression in this important sector.

At Key Stage 5 we offer the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care. BTEC Nationals are widely recognised by industry and higher education as the signature vocational qualification at Level 3. They provide progression to the workplace either directly or via study at a higher level. Our curriculum therefore is set out to enable students to develop skills and qualifications which will allow them to study further, or enter a profession possibly within the Health and Social Care Sector.

Key Stage 4 – Level 1 / 2 BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care.

Throughout Key Stage Four, students can opt to study the Level 1 / 2 BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care. They will be taught five one-hour lessons per fortnight. The curriculum covers three compulsory components which gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The main focus is on four areas of equal importance, which cover the:

• development of key skills that prove your aptitude in health and social care such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health

• process that underpins effective ways of working in health and social care, such as designing a plan to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing

• attitudes that are considered most important in health and social care, including the care values that are vitally important in the sector, and the opportunity to practise applying them

• knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in the sector such as human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing.

The components studied are:

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development (internally assessed coursework)

Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values (internally assessed coursework) Component 3: Health and Wellbeing (External Examination)

Year 10

In Year 10 Students cover Component 1 exclusively to Easter, and then Component 3 Learning Aim A and B.

Autumn term

Component 1 - Learning aim A: Understand human growth and development across life stages and the factors that affect it.

Year 10 - Spring term

Component 1 - Learning aim B: Investigate how individuals deal with life events

Year 10 - Summer term

Component 3 – Learning aim A: Factors that affect health and wellbeing / Learning aim B: Interpreting health indicators

Year 11

In Year 11 students revisit work from Component 3 learning aim A and B, and learn learning aim C in preparation for the examination in the January Exam series. They would then complete Component 2.

Autumn term

Component 3 – Recap of Learning aim A: Factors that affect health and wellbeing and Learning aim B: Interpreting health indicators

Learning aim C: Person-centred health and wellbeing improvement plans

Year 11 - Spring term

Component 2 - Learning aim A: Understand the different types of health and social care services and barriers to accessing them

Year 11 - Summer term

Component 2 - Learning aim B: Demonstrate care values and review own practice

Key Stage 5

Health and Social Care has been a popular choice at Norton College Sixth Form, with students opting to study the Level 3 BTEC Nationals Extended Certificate. We believe that this qualification provides a great stepping-stone towards further study or employment within the sector.

You will study four units on the course. There are three mandatory units of the qualification incorporating topics relevant across the health and social care sector:

Unit 1 - Human Lifespan Development (External examination completed in Y12)

Unit 2 - Working in Health and Social Care (External examination completed in Y12)

Unit 5 - Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs. (Internally assessed coursework)

There is also one additional unit which we deliver in Y13

Unit 11 - Psychological Perspectives (Internally assessed coursework)

Through varied and creative teaching methods, within a supportive academic environment, students are encouraged to become independent, evaluative learners, studying Health & Social Care to the highest levels. Academic study is complemented by a number of extra-curricular enrichment opportunities, which aim to broaden and develop students’ skills, knowledge and understanding of the subject in different contexts.

Year 12 - Autumn term

Unit 1 – Learning aim A: Human growth and development through the life stages / Learning aim B: Factors affecting human growth and development / Learning aim C: Effects of ageing. It is intended that you will be ready to complete your examination in the January exam Series.

Year 12 - Spring term

Unit 2 – Learning aim A: The roles and responsibilities of people who work in the health and social care sector / Learning aim B: The roles of organisations in the health and social care sector.

Year 12 - Summer term

Unit 2 – Learning aim B: The roles of organisations in the health and social care sector / Working with people with specific needs in the health and social care sector. It is intended that you will be ready to complete your examination in the May/June exam Series.

Unit 5 - Learning aim A: Examine principles, values and skills which underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals

Year 13 - Autumn term

Unit 5 - Learning aim A: Examine principles, values and skills which underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals / Learning aim B: Examine the ethical issues involved when providing care and support to meet individual needs.

Year 13 - Spring term

Unit 5 - Learning aim C: Investigate the principles behind enabling individuals with care and support needs to overcome challenges / Learning aim D: Investigate the roles of professionals and how they work together to provide the care and support necessary to meet individual needs.

Year 13 - Summer term

Unit 11 - Learning aim A: Examine how psychological perspectives contribute to the understanding of human development and behaviour / Learning aim B: Examine the contribution of psychological perspectives to the management and treatment of service users’ specific behaviours / Learning aim C: Examine how psychological perspectives are applied in health and social care settings.
